I would like to use this blog to discuss educational resources offered around our area (or the area you live in). I currently teach in Mobile County and I have not lived in this area very long. I would like to share these locations with my students as well as take note of them for my own personal use. This could include locations for field trips or areas that offer educational resources for students outside of the classroom. For example, one area in our community I have visited that I think would make an excellent field trip is the Mobile Museum of Art. This could be used as a field trip to study art or history. This would be a great place to encourage students to attend and I could tie this into a classroom lesson. Can you think of any other areas that would serve these purposes in our area? Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

I think it would be cool to visit the USS Alabama Battleship for a field trip. I know the cost and lunch is relatively low, and they also have a flight simulator that the students would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI have also heard of some teachers taking students to the Africatown Bridge and conducting research on the events that happened there. I am not sure of all the details as far as tours or anything. Maybe some of the other classmates will know more!
The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Museum is a great place for educational field trips. I worked there for two years when I was in undergrad and I loved it. The Exploreum offers hands-on science lessons. There are several exhibit halls for the students to enjoy. There is also an IMAX theatre for the students to watch an hour-long educational movie. The staff is usually very friendly and accommodating.
ReplyDeleteJahmarkus,
DeleteI haven't been the the exploreum before, thank you for mentioning it. That is awesome that you had the opportunity to work their and see the exhibits up close. I think my students would absolutely love the IMAX experience as well. Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely keep it in mind in the future!
Here is a link to information about Sea, Sand & Stars in Orange Beach!

This amazing place has a giant aquarium, planetarium, access to the Hubble Space Telescope, hands on marine life activities, and outside gazebo classroom. The 6th graders at my school visit this each year and they absolutely love it!
Lauren,
DeleteThank you so much for sharing this link. I have never been hear and I honestly have never even heard of it! It's amazing how many resources we have right here in our area that our students can explore. This would also be a great suggestion for parents during school breaks. That's excellent that you got to take your 6th graders! I hope I have the opportunity to take one of my future classes.
